Most discussions regarding the future of mankind usually involve a timeframe of a few thousand years into the future. I thought it would be interesting to discuss what mankind would look like tens of millions of years into the future. How much will we have changed? Will we have seperated into seperate races thanks to space colonization and genetic tampering? Will mankind even make it past the next few centuries? In my opinion, humans millions of years into the future will physically, be a much inferior looking specimen. Millions of years of relying on machines to do our work for us has resulted in the the atrophy of the arm and leg muscles and physical strenght is pretty much non existant. Our brains have grown considerably in size and we are pretty much hairless. The human mind and computers have now been integrated for millions of years but the technology is so advanced that it is nearly impossible to even be identified as a machine as it is very much a part of our biology as our heart or our lungs by now. |

It is actually hard enough to imagine what humans will look like after just few thousands of years !! I believe after millions of years physical existence wont be even necessary to retain consciousness, there won't be any more bodies and instead of saying "mind over matter" it is going to be "mind over energy" Another opinion is that humans will just eliminate them selves before that happens, maybe at some point they will be aware enough of how meaningless this whole existence thing and decide to shut it down and let all rest in peace |

Interesting post. Machines probably will do most things for us one day but I don't think human strengh and muscle will be non existant. I believe the human body will become more muscular through evolution as people are now wanting to lose weight and build muscle more then ever. I think the human body will eventually be born fitter and be able to build muscle faster to suit the lifestyle of the human race. It is hard to evolve to suit our climate because we have control over how hot or cold it is in our homes so there is no need to change but through this more green house gasses are created and there are things like WiFi, Mobile Phones, Bluetooth and Infra red that we are constantly now sorounded by which will increase even more as technology improves so perhaps one day our mind will be able to interact with these signles or maybe they will become visivle to the human eye. I can see the human race being very powerful through evolution in the coming millions of years. So many people are now into video games and computers which become more difficult and complex as they evolve which increases our hand eye co ordination. Maybe one day it can be controled through the mind as well as a lot of things just like the ability telekinesis. Maybe we will have wings as I have seen a lot of people with giant shoulderblades and perhaps they are growing through evolution as some of us can be very airborne with sky diving and flight travel. It's always been mans dream to fly maybe thoughts can effect the human evolution. Perhaps one day the body will be able to use the magnetic feilds in the centre of the earth to its advatnage. Being able to fly or maybe just moving faster. We could become superhuman due to experiments and DNA tampering. We could be stronger to the suns UV rays. In tens of thousands of million years I can see humans being imortal and fused with technology increasing thought calculations and body performance. The ability to defy gravity. Imune to most sicknesses. Maybe we we will be in a matrix world as the planet may be in terrible condition. We could have already come that far and already be there now. |

Although I appreciate the attempt to broaden the perspective, I'm persuaded by the Princeton professor's analysis of frequencies of events that suggests a non-return to the moon for about 40 years, to give about another 40 years to either return to the moon or to never again progress so far. This puts a considerable pressure on the current generation to come up with more persusaive and accepted arguments for space migration, than have so far been presented either on this or any other forum. One can surf with assorted free hours among scientific and spiritual and philosophical websites, books and essays, and there is nothing but a wasteland. This is a most impressive website, mimicking Jeopardy stars, but its essential failures remain those of humankind so far...there is nothing that will lead toward space migration as the one and only important philosophical, spiritual or scientific goal, determined by the premises of cosmology and evolution, the primary truths we have been able to determine from our search for truth. |

Does any one have any ideas of the how, as oppose to the what and when? |

We will most likely have died out by then. If you ask me, we'll live for 5-6 million years more. Tops. But if we do survive, we'll be smarter, shorter, fatter and generally warmer. You see, thanks to the last ice age we grew smarter. The brain needed to be bigger for us to survive, we adapted and got more brain capacity. If this happens again during the next ice age, which it most likely will, since it'll be colder. Thanks to global warming and all. And, since dolphins actually have more brain capacity than us, if we die out, they'll most likely become the ruling species. The only reason they don't get smarter is because we humans hold them back, isn't it? |

Everyone talks about evolution I just wanted to point out that evolution no longer exists for humans.... Not by Darwin's Theory anyway. Sounds harsh but weak people don't die and can reproduce easily and the lazy stupid people who live off government handouts often have the most children. I believe the future of humans is in DNA manipulation. At least that way we could keep evolving to be something better than we are. It's amazing we have the ability to almost eradicate all diseases/illnesses within a couple of generations but there isn't really much interest in pushing for it. We've deciphered the code now let's figure out how to write it. It's called Human Germline Engineering if anyone's interested here's a good source: http://www.geneticsandsociety.org/article.php?id=122 Maybe we should create a person 1000 times smarter than everyone else and see what he has to say about it haha. Just my two cents.. |
